Alexander Mogilny defected from the USSR in May 1989, becoming the first Soviet hockey player to do so, and went on to score 76 goals in a single NHL season with the Buffalo Sabres. Born in Khabarovsk in 1969, he combined explosive speed with elite finishing to become one of the most gifted wingers of his generation.
