Chilly Gonzales — musician with roots in the Russian Empire
Chilly Gonzales (born Jason Charles Beck) is a Canadian musician, composer, and entertainer based in Cologne. A classically trained pianist who performs in a dressing gown, he has worked with Feist, Daft Punk, and Drake, and holds the Guinness World Record for the longest solo concert.
Tracing the roots — Canada
Born in Montreal to a family with Russian and Hungarian Jewish roots, Gonzales grew up in the Eastern European immigrant culture of Canada's Jewish community. His theatrical excess and classical rigour draw on a tradition of Jewish entertainers who performed identity as spectacle.
A career defined by ambition
"Pop music is classical music that hasn't been dead long enough to be taken seriously."
