Russian Connection

Tracing the roots — Lithuania / Bulgaria

Sheinbaum's paternal grandfather was a Jewish immigrant from Lithuania (then Russian Empire) who came to Mexico in the early 20th century. Her maternal grandparents were from Bulgaria, also within the Russian Empire's historical sphere. She is a direct product of the Eastern European Jewish diaspora that transformed Mexico's intellectual and professional classes.

Her father's parents were Ashkenazi Jews who emigrated from Lithuania (Russian Empire) in the 1920s.
