Tracing the roots — Donetsk (Ukraine)
Born in Donetsk in 1988 to a Russian-speaking family, Ovtcharov emigrated to Germany and developed through the German table tennis system. His Donetsk origins — a Russian-speaking industrial city in eastern Ukraine — connect him to the Soviet sporting tradition, while his career belongs entirely to Germany. He publicly opposed Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
