Efrem Zimbalist — violinist with roots in the Russian Empire
Efrem Zimbalist was a Russian-born violin virtuoso and educator who became director of the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia — one of the world's great conservatories — from 1941 to 1968. His son Efrem Zimbalist Jr. became the Hollywood actor.

Born in Rostov-on-Don in 1889 and trained at the St. Petersburg Conservatory under Leopold Auer (teacher of Heifetz and Milstein), Zimbalist brought the full weight of the Russian violin school to America. As director of Curtis he shaped generations of American classical musicians.
