Igor Sikorsky — aviation (helicopter) with roots in the Russian Empire
Igor Sikorsky was a Russian-American aviation pioneer born in Kyiv (Russian Empire) who designed the first multi-engine aircraft and the first practical helicopter. His VS-300 (1939) became the template for virtually every helicopter built since, and the Sikorsky company he founded remains one of the world's leading aerospace manufacturers.
Tracing the roots — Kyiv
Born in Kyiv in 1889 to Ivan Sikorsky, a prominent Russian psychiatrist and professor, Igor grew up in an intellectually stimulating household and showed an early passion for aviation. After the Bolshevik revolution he fled Russia, first to France then to the United States, where he built his aeronautical empire from scratch — literally starting by selling eggs from the chickens he raised on his Connecticut farm.
Kyiv. At the time, this region lay within the Russian Empire, which spanned from Poland to the Pacific.
