Born in Okny (now Krasni Okny, Ukraine) in 1913, Gelfand was expelled from high school for his father's class background and arrived in Moscow at 16 with no formal qualifications, yet was accepted by Kolmogorov as a student. He spent 50 years building one of the most celebrated mathematical seminars in history at Moscow State University before emigrating to the US in 1990.
