Biography

Marc Albrechtconductor with roots in the Russian Empire

Marc Albrecht was born in Hanover in 1964 and studied first with his father, the conductor George Alexander Albrecht, before continuing in Vienna. He assisted Claudio Abbado at the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester, and in 1995 became Generalmusikdirektor at the Staatstheater Darmstadt.

From 2011 to 2020 he was chief conductor of the Dutch National Opera, the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra and the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra simultaneously — an unusual triple appointment that made him the central figure in Amsterdam's operatic and orchestral life for a decade. His work there concentrated on the late Romantic and early modern repertoire, and produced a substantial recorded legacy on the Pentatone label. He has been announced as chief conductor of the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra from the 2026-27 season.

He is a three-times great-grandson of Baron Ludwig Knoop, the second conductor in consecutive generations of that descent, and a first cousin of Ursula von der Leyen.
