Tracing the roots — Moscow
Born in Moscow in 1989, Nastia came to the United States at age two when her father Valeri Liukin — a Soviet Olympic champion — emigrated to build a new gymnastics career. Her entire athletic identity is the synthesis of Soviet gymnastics culture transplanted to American soil, and her 2008 Olympic gold is that synthesis at its finest.
