Nicolai Gedda was a Swedish operatic tenor of Russian and Swedish heritage, born in Stockholm but raised speaking Russian as his first language. Widely considered one of the most gifted and versatile tenors of the 20th century, he was fluent in 10 languages and sang leading roles in all of them.

His father Mikhail Ustinov was a Russian Don Cossack who had emigrated to Sweden after the Revolution, and Nicolai grew up bilingual in Russian and Swedish. His Russian heritage was central to his artistic identity — he specialised in Russian opera and lieder, and his Russian upbringing gave him interpretive depth that set him apart from every other tenor of his generation.
