Pavel Datsyuk — nhl (legend) with roots in the Russian Empire
Pavel Datsyuk is a Russian professional ice hockey player born in Sverdlovsk (now Yekaterinburg) who became one of the most complete players in NHL history with the Detroit Red Wings. Known as the Magic Man for his dazzling puck-handling, he won three Selke Trophies as the best defensive forward and three Stanley Cups.
Tracing the roots — Born there
Born in Sverdlovsk in 1978 and undrafted until the 6th round by Detroit in 1998, Datsyuk's emergence as one of the NHL's greatest players is one of scouting's most celebrated stories. His Russian hockey education — the technical skills drilled into him through Yekaterinburg's hockey system — was the foundation of skills no one in the NHL had ever quite seen before.
