Richard Lewis — comedian with roots in the Russian Empire
Richard Lewis was an American stand-up comedian and actor known for his anxious, confessional, self-deprecating humour and his long friendship and on-screen partnership with Larry David in Curb Your Enthusiasm (HBO, 2000-2024). His stand-up work influenced a generation of comedians.
Tracing the roots — Jewish
Born in Brooklyn in 1947 to parents whose families had emigrated from Russia and Romania (Russian Empire), Lewis grew up in the Jewish immigrant world of New Jersey. His comedy — obsessively self-analytical, drawn from therapy and anxiety — is the pure distilled expression of the Jewish-American neurotic tradition descended from that Russian immigrant world.
A career defined by ambition
