Samuel Goldwyn — producer with roots in the Russian Empire
Samuel Goldwyn (born Schmuel Gelbfisz) was a Polish-born American film producer who co-founded Paramount Pictures, co-founded the Goldwyn Pictures Corporation (which became MGM), and then built Samuel Goldwyn Productions — producing some of Hollywood's most prestigious films including Wuthering Heights, The Best Years of Our Lives, and Guys and Dolls.
Tracing the roots — Warsaw
Born in Warsaw (Russian Empire) in 1879 to a Jewish family, Goldwyn arrived in America speaking no English, worked as a glove salesman, and became one of the founding fathers of Hollywood. He embodied — more completely than almost anyone — the Jewish immigrant's transformation of himself into the architect of American popular culture. His Goldwynisms (malapropisms) became as famous as his films.
Warsaw. At the time, this region lay within the Russian Empire, which spanned from Poland to the Pacific.
