Slava Fetisov — nhl (legend) with roots in the Russian Empire
Viacheslav (Slava) Fetisov is a Russian ice hockey player and politician who is widely regarded as the greatest defenceman in Soviet hockey history. He led CSKA Moscow and the Soviet national team through their dominant era, won two Stanley Cups with the Detroit Red Wings, and later served as Russia's Minister of Sport.
Tracing the roots — Born there
Born in Moscow in 1958, Fetisov was the captain and spiritual leader of the Soviet hockey empire. His battle to defect from the Soviet system — he was blacklisted for years before finally being allowed to join the NHL in 1989 — was one of sport's great personal struggles. His return to Russia as Minister of Sport represents a remarkable full circle in Russian sporting history.
