Vladimir Kramnik — chess with roots in the USSR
Vladimir Kramnik is a Russian chess grandmaster born in Tuapse who became World Chess Champion by defeating the legendary Garry Kasparov in 2000 — ending Kasparov's 15-year reign. He held the Classical World Championship title until 2007 and is considered one of the greatest positional players in history.
Tracing the roots — Tuapse
Born in Tuapse (Krasnodar Krai) in 1975, Kramnik was developed through Russia's elite chess system and trained at the famous Botvinnik school. His defeat of Kasparov — playing the Berlin Defence with extraordinary precision — was one of chess history's most celebrated upsets. He now lives in France and has been outspoken in opposition to Russia's war.
