Zero Mostel — actor with roots in the Russian Empire
Zero Mostel was an American actor and comedian born in Brooklyn to parents from Galicia (Russian Empire) who created two of Broadway's most iconic roles: Max Bialystock in The Producers (1967) and Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof (1964). He was blacklisted during the McCarthy era and refused to name names.
Tracing the roots — Brody (Galicia)
Born Samuel Joel Mostel in Brooklyn in 1915 to Israel Mostel and Cina Druchs, both Jewish immigrants from Brody (Galicia, then Austro-Hungarian Empire, borderland with Russian Empire), Mostel grew up in the Jewish immigrant world of New York. His refusal to cooperate with HUAC — enduring years of unemployment rather than betray colleagues — is one of American entertainment's great acts of moral courage.
Brody (Galicia). At the time, this region lay within the Russian Empire, which spanned from Poland to the Pacific.
