Биография

Карл Фёдорович фон Меккengineer / industrialist с корнями из Russian Empire

Karl Otto Georg von Meck came from an old Baltic German noble family with origins in Silesia, long settled in the Russian Empire. He trained as an engineer and spent his early career in state service, at a point when Russia had almost no railway network at all.

Defeat in the Crimean War changed that. The war had shown that the empire could not move men or supplies across its own territory at the speed a modern conflict demanded, and the state turned to private capital to build railways quickly. Von Meck was among the first generation of Russian railway contractors to take up the opportunity. He left the security of state employment for concession work and built, among others, the Moscow–Ryazan line, converting an engineer's salary into one of the larger private fortunes in the empire within roughly fifteen years.

He married Nadezhda Filaretovna Frolovskaya when she was seventeen. She was closely involved in the business and is generally credited with pressing him to leave state service for private contracting. They had many children, of whom eleven survived him.

He died suddenly in 1876, leaving his widow in control of the railways and the fortune. What she did with it — thirteen years of financial support for Tchaikovsky, and a household that briefly employed the young Claude Debussy — is the reason the name is remembered outside Russian railway history. Their son Nikolai married Tchaikovsky's niece.
