Биография

Урсула фон дер Ляйенpolitician с корнями из Russian Empire

Ursula von der Leyen was born in Ixelles, Brussels, in 1958, where her father Ernst Albrecht was then working as a senior official of the European Commission. The family returned to Lower Saxony when she was thirteen. She qualified as a physician at Hannover Medical School and worked in medicine and public health before entering politics, and spent a period in the late 1970s at the London School of Economics, enrolled under the name Rose Ladson — the family name of her American great-grandmother.

Her paternal line runs back to the Russian Empire. Her three-times great-grandfather was Baron Ludwig Knoop, the Bremen-born industrialist who equipped 187 cotton mills across the empire and founded the Kreenholm works at Narva. Knoop's eldest daughter, Baroness Louise Dorothea Betty von Knoop, married the Bremen cotton merchant George Alexander Albrecht. Their son Carl Albrecht, also a cotton merchant, married Mary Ladson Robertson of a Charleston, South Carolina family; their son was the physician and philosopher Carl Eduard Albrecht, father of Ernst Albrecht.

It is a lineage built on cotton across three continents — the mills of the Russian Empire, the Bremen trade that financed them, and the American South that supplied the raw material. The Russian holdings of L. Knoop & Co were nationalised after 1917, and the family's subsequent standing was rebuilt entirely in Germany, in medicine, scholarship, music and public administration.

She entered federal politics in the 2000s, serving as German federal minister for family affairs, then for labour and social affairs, and from 2013 to 2019 as minister of defence. In 2019 she became President of the European Commission, the institution at which her father had been a director-general five decades earlier, and was appointed to a second term in 2024.

The Knoop connection is documented in standard genealogical references and on the Wikipedia entries for both the Albrecht family and Knoop himself, but it plays no part in her public biography as generally presented, and is largely unknown to European readers.
